EOS TELEVISION BACKDROP TUTORIALS
Backdrops
Backdrops are an essential part of most photography, videography and even film making. For the studio photographer using the right backdrops to accentuate the costuming of your subject is critical. Having a wide variety of colors, patterns, and textures is paramount for any well equipped facility.
For the Videographer and Filmmaker, sooner or later you’ll find the need to have a assortment of "backdrops" to put the talent in front of that is perhaps less busy than the organic environment you are shooting in or better contrasts the desired look of the scene. Or perhaps using scenic backdrops is simply the more cost effective, cheaper than actually shooting the scene in the actual geographical location needed.
Scenic Backdrops have been used in the motion picture and television industry for years to create the illusion of grandiose landscapes, cityscapes, or environments all the while being big flat paintings. Used properly the audience seldom realizes they have been tricked. Remember the beginning of Austin Powers Gold Member?
Backdrops come in a variety of textile materials and either Solid Color, Patterns, or Scenic designs. Whatever your backdrop needs we should have what you are looking for.
Paper or Cloth?
Both materials have their best suited application and it would not be fair to say that one material is better than another. In fact each possesses unique desirable traits depending on the application. As with any craft it is important to choose the right tool for the job at hand.
Paper Backdrops
Paper is the preferred choice for all "product shot" work and most High Key photography. Paper creates a perfect Cyc transitioning form vertical back to the floor. It also offers a a smooth texture less look. You never have to worry about removing wrinkles from a paper roll. Paper Rolls come in 2 widths and a variety of lengths. 54" wide and 104" wide.
Cloth Backdrops
Cloth Backdrops offer the ability to “drape” creating contrast textures and a more obvious background component. In a chromakey studio Muslin Cloth easily creates a perfect "Cyc" or radiused transition where the vertical back transitions to the floor. Muslin Cloth allows the manufacturer to apply a plethora of dying techniques to create many different types and styles of visual effect and patterns. Cloth is also easier to work with in large sizes. Muslin backdrops are the easiest to transport as they fold up into a small stack.
